Dungeons & Dragons for First Time Players

Growing up, all the cool kids played D&D. They wore letterman jackets, got out of class early on game days and had outrageously steamy dating lives. All the while, you were forced to watch from the outside, wishing you were as cool as them. No? That wasn't how your high school worked? Fine, but it's still possible that you always thought the game might be fun, but never wanted to sign on for a three-month campaign, filled with six-hour sessions of rolling dice to figure out your dexterity or whatever. You just wanted to try it out. Well, August 22nd, you can join us at Down the Road Brewery in Everett to do exactly that.

We're running a Dungeons & Dragons for First Time Players night. Our Dungeon Master Extraordinaire has premade characters and scenarios so you don't have to worry about that part. We'll do a quick 5 or 10 minute explanation of how the game works, and then you'll jump in and start playing. Wanna have a brew while you play? Good news, Down the Road Brewery serves some of the best beer in the land, and you're definitely encouraged to have a pint while you play.

Tickets are only $10 but space is limited so grab a seat here before it's too late: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dungeons-dragons-for-first-time-players-night-tickets-48810961901

Learn and Play: Board Games for Liars- Coup, Skull, Secret Hitler

Learn and Play: Board Games for Liars- Coup, Skull, Secret Hitler

This event is for the liars and the cheats. The folks who revel in deceit. The ones who don't flinch when they tell you they'd love to see video of your child's dance recital. For those of you bored with the truth, this event's for you. And if you're just an honest abe who can't tell a falsehood without turning red, don't worry, we were lying about this just being for the rogues and the scoundrels. This event's for you too.

Over the last few years, there's been a surge in board games themed around lying. Moles working to bring down military units from the inside. Bluffers daring someone to prove them wrong. We don't know exactly what it says about our society that these options have become more popular, but who are we to complain? They're pretty great.

On July 18th, we're introducing you to the world of dishonest games, and helping you meet some fun people in the process. Over the course of the event, we'll play three different games. Before each round, our highly trained board game officanado will give a rules explanation so clear a potato could understand them. Then you'll play with other folks in attendance.

Each round, there will be a new game and you'll get matched with new tablemates. Want to stay with your friends? No problem, just let us know when you arrive, and we'll make sure you stick together.

We'll start off with Coup, the perfect appetizer. A game where you manipulate, bluff, murder and bribe your way to being the last member of the royal court still standing. After that comes Skull. A classic that's been played for centuries that is, essentially, everything you thought poker was when you were a kid without all the boring math and waiting-impatiently-for-good-hands. That's right, it's all bluffing, raise and reading your opponent. Final game is Secret Hitler, and don't worry, it's not nearly as offensive as it sounds. Invented by one of the creators of Cards Against Humanity (okay fine, maybe it's a little offensive), in this one you are all liberals, except for a few fascists working to undermine the government and turn it into a dictatorship. Figure out who the traitors are before it's too late.

Discovering new games and meeting new people not enough for you? Your ticket also comes with a token good for a free drink at Down the Road Brewery. Worried you won't be a good enough liar? It's okay, these games are so fun, you'll still have a good time. Besides, nobody ever suspects the angelic newbie. Already know how to play one or more of these games? Then you already know how much fun they are and you should absolutely come. And if anyone asks you if you've played before, that's fine. No one's going to make you answer honestly.

Tickets are $10, but not for the first 7 people to register. First ticket buyer gets admission for a mere $3. Second ticket buyer for $4. Third for $5, etc. Once we get to seven attendees, the event will be officially a go (if we get to 24 hours before the event and still haven't sold 7 tickets, we will cancel and issue full refunds. This doesn't happen often but we include the disclaimer just in case). After those first 7, all remaining tickets will be $10 each. Don't worry, we won't raise our rates after that. Trust us.

Grab your tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/learn-and-play-board-games-for-liars-secret-hitler-coup-and-skull-tickets-47559218904

Indie Game Developers Night

We're bringing back one of our all-time favorite events: An indie game developers night where you can play games built by local designers. Not only that, but the designers themselves will be there, giving you a chance to talk shop with the creators. Not only that, but your ticket gets you a token for one beer crafted by the recent winners of Boston Magazine's Malt Madness contest for best locally brewed beer. Not only that, but if you get bored (which you won't!) the brewery has wall-to-wall pinball machines. Not only that but... okay, it's only all that. But you can play awesome games like Moonquake where you're aliens competing over the last rocketship off an about-to-implode planet! Or Backyard Defense Squad where you're defending your treehouse from the most evil bad guys imaginable. We'll have six local designers, and possibly more if the event sells especially well. First seven people to buy tickets get theirs for only $5! Everyone else pays 10. Grab your ticket here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/indie-board-game-demo-night-tickets-45584444300

Oh, and we should also say that if you've been to one of our indie game developers nights before, you'll be excited to here that these are all new games we haven't demoed at any previous events.

BoardGame Speed Dating at the Friendly Toast in Cambridge

That's right, more board game speed dating! The response we've had to these so far has been great and we love making money, so we're doing more! Wait, um, we love helping people find love, so we're doing more! BoardGame Speed Dating gives you the chance to meet new people and play great board games all at the same time. 9 out of 10 people surveyed agree that blindly meeting potential dating partners through apps and other methods is the worst. And 9 out of 10 people surveyed agree that board games are the best. So we're combining the two and making meeting someone actually fun. Our next event is at the Friendly Toast in Cambridge, rated by 9 out of 10 people as one of the best places to have breakfast for dinner.* Spaces are limited, so buy your ticket here before they're all gone: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/board-game-speed-dating-cambridge-tickets-45569755365

Pizza, Pajamas and Party Games!!

April 23rd, we're hosting a night full of some of our favorite party games. Everyone who registers will come together for group games of Celebrity (aka salad, aka hats, aka like a million other names)Two Rooms and a Boom, inappropriate-giant-group-card-game-to-be-named-later, and possibly one more.

Plus, if you’re the kind of person who hates putting on real pants when you leave the house and who loves pizza (which is definitely the kind of person we are), great news! You are welcome (though not required) to show up in night-time lounging attire and order some of Boston’s best pizza while you play.

We need at least 8 people for this to run and the restaurant needs a count of how many people are coming, so register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pajamas-pizza-party-games-play-celebrity-two-rooms-a-boom-and-more-tickets-43477666872

Board Game Speed Dating at Down The Road Brewery

That's right, we're actually hosting two more board game speed dating events. Which should tell you how popular the first one was. Or, how unoriginal we are and how we have lazily decided to repeat what works. This one is at Down the Road Brewery in Everett, MA. They've got amazing brews, a delicious Mediterranean style food truck and like 15 pinball machines. We're really excited about being there.

In what has to be a good argument for the "we're just lazy option" we covered above, we're just copy and pasting the description of how this event works from our other speed dating notice: Over the course of the night, a gaming concierge will walk you through several different games. You'll play them all, rediscovering old classics and trying out new ones you haven't heard of. You'll play each game with a different group of players, getting a chance to meet some other fun singles. At the end of the night, give your gaming concierge a list of the people you met that you'd like to date and a list of the people you met that you'd like to just hang out with as friends. If any two people put down the same name as each other in either column, then your gaming concierge will make sure you get each other's e-mail address and you can coordinate a time to hang out on your own.

Tickets are $20 but come with a $5 gift card to the brewery where we're hosting this event. Spaces are limited and last time we did this it sold out, so sign up now! To book a slot and also see a bit more about how this works, go here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/board-game-speed-dating-tickets-43391316596

Board Game Speed Dating

This February, BoardGame Empire is taking on our biggest challenge yet: Trying to make it actually fun to meet someone.

Picture this: You sit down for a night of games. Over the course of the night, a gaming concierge walks you through several different games. You play them all, rediscovering old classics and trying out new ones you haven't heard of. You play each game with a different group of players, getting a chance to meet some other fun singles. At the end of the night, you give your gaming concierge a list of the people you met that you'd like to date and a list of the people you met that you'd like to just hang out with as friends. If any two people put down the same name as each other in either column, then your gaming concierge will make sure you get each other's e-mail address and you can coordinate a time to hang out on your own.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up for a spot and find true love. Or, at the very least, find a new board game you like. Tickets are $15 but come with a $5 gift card to the restaurant where we're hosting this event (Regina Pizzeria in Allston). Spaces are limited so sign up now! Word Games Tournament

Words. People use them every day. But you do more than that. You use 14-letter behemoths to make your point. You've always got the perfect synonym at your fingertips. And if being good at vocabulary were a sport, you'd be a gold medalist. Well guess what, on February 5th it is. Well, it's not really a sport. There's basically no physical exertion involved and if a player gets injured doing this then something has gone horribly wrong. But it is a competition and we do want to see you there.

We're hosting our 2nd ever word games tournament where teams of 2-4 compete in a three-round event, accumulating points with each victory until a champion is finally crowned. We'll play Codenames followed by Taboo followed by your team splitting up with players able to either play Bananagrams or Word Domination.

If you haven't heard of some of these before, don't worry, we'll explain the rules before each round and we assure you, they're all fantastic.

Space is limited so grab a slot here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/word-games-tournament-tickets-42054158119

No BoardGame Night July 3rd

Did you know John Adams thought July 2nd would be forever remembered as our Independence Day? That was the day the Second Continental Congress approved the motion for independence. John Adams told his wife, Abigail, in a letter, "The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary Festival... It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." Ya hear that? Shews! Of course, others celebrate Independence Day on July 4th. We've decided to split the difference and take off July 3rd. Also, we think the restaurant will be slow that day.

Indie Game Designers Night

There's no way you could ever get sick of the board games you love, but some times you need to spice things up and do something new. Maybe try some role playing, or have fun with new partners. Well good news! On June 19th, we're hosting an event with some games built by cool, local designers. Come try out Red Scare Redux, a Soviet era spy-based card game. Or Chesscalation, a new take on a classic strategy game. Or if film's your thing, have some fun with the Original Movie Game. Or discover what it's like to be a dragon in Dragoon. Or try Corporate Raiders, the only board game that teaches you how to mercilessly steal employees from other companies and then lay them all off for massive profits! And while you try out these new games, you can chat with some awesome local designers.

Admission is free but this may sell out. And even if it doesn't, it would still really help if you signed up for a ticket. Understanding roughly how many people are coming will allow us to make sure we have the right number of game developers there and also will allow the developers to make sure they're properly staffed to handle the player load. The more people that indicate they're attending, the more games we'll showcase.

Dungeons & Dragons for First-Time Players Take 2

This event was so well-received when we ran it last month that we decided to bring it back. DM extraordinaire Seamus Conneely returns to host another night of Dungeons & Dragons for first time players. This is for all those people who have been always curious to try the game, but intimidated by the time commitment involved, how complex it all seemed or just the fact that the people you knew who played it weren't looking to have some newbie join them. Seamus has prepared the characters, he's prepared the scenario and he'll explain how everything works as the game goes along. All you have to do is show up and play in one of the two free 90-minute sessions we have available and see what this D&D fuss is all about. Unfortunately, this event is all booked up, but you can still join our waitlist and we'll let you know if space frees up.

Dungeons & Dragons for First-Time Players

We're excited to welcome DM extraordinaire, Seamus Conneely.

We're excited to welcome DM extraordinaire, Seamus Conneely.

Have you ever been curious to try Dungeons & Dragons, but scared off by the fact that you have to spend 18 hours making a character and rolling for stats, whatever the hell that means? Did you not feel like signing on for a months-long campaign or having to learn all the lingo and rules? Or did it just seem like something for only the nerdiest of nerds? Well, November 28th, we're giving you the chance to try the game out in a 90-minute session with a Dungeon Master who's a pro at making the game accessible for first-time players.

DM extraordinaire Seamus Conneely will pre-create the characters and the scenario for you, and he'll explain how things work along the way so that you can learn as you go, all while having a beer.

Playing is free, but there are only five slots for each game, one starting at 6:30 and the other at 8:00. So if you'd like to play, you have to grab a ticket on our Eventbrite page. Sign up with some friends or get a ticket for just yourself to be matched up with other players there.

Bandits and Thieves Tournament

Let's be honest, it's so much more fun to be the bad guy. And November 14th, we give you the chance to do exactly that in a tournament combining two of our favorite games: "Ca$h 'n Guns" and "Bang! The Dice Game." In "Ca$h 'n Guns" you're a team of gangsters who just pulled off a big heist, and now it's time to split up the loot, but not before having one big standoff. And in "Bang! The Dice Game," you're cowboys in the wild west, engaging in a battle between sheriff, deputies, outlaws and renegades, only aside from the sheriff, nobody knows who anyone else is. So, basically, you're trying to take out an enemy target without knowing exactly who that person is. We'll play at least one round of each, but possibly more depending on timing, and you'll accumulate points in the process. Person with the most points at the end gets a trophy, a prize and eternal glory in the Hall of Champions

Both games are a ton of fun, and if you don't know how to play either of them, don't worry. We'll have a rules explanation at 6:45. Let us know you're coming to the event on Facebook (URL) or just show up that night. Just make sure you're there before 7, because after that, it'll be too late to join.

Indie Gamers Demo Night

The Massachusetts area is filled with independent designers making the next wave of awesome games. And on October 17th, at the Elephant & Castle in downtown Boston on Devoshire Street, you can get a sneak peak at some of them. Local designers, including Lay Waste Games (who made Dragoon, as seen above), Eye4Games and BrickHaus Games, will be showcasing their latest work. And yes, they'll be ready for gameplay, so you can actually test these suckers out. If you've ever been to a board game festival before, you know how much fun it is to be surrounded by the energy of people creating something new, and we're hoping to bring that to our event. So bring your friends and try some new games.

And if this isn't really your thing, don't worry, you can still play any of our 60+ games with your friends, at any time from 5:30-9:30, just like always.

Word Games Tournament

Our next tournament is a word games bonanza at the Elephant & Castle in downtown Boston on Devoshire Street. Get together a team of 2-4 people and come compete against others in a series of word games. Round 1: Codenames. Round 2: Taboo. Round 3: Your team splits up with some people playing Bananagrams and others playing Boggle. Each round, you'll be accumulating points for your team, and whoever finishes with the most points gets a prize. Oh yeah, and a lifetime of bragging rights.

If you don't know how to play any of those games, don't worry, we'll do a tutorial beforehand at 6:45. They're all very easy to learn.

And if you don't want to play in the tournament and just want to play any of our 60+ games with your friends, that's totally cool. Regular game night will be running all night from 5:30-9:30 just like always.
